Lafayette Building Windows

Lafayette Building

The Detroit City Council gave the go ahead to tear down the Lafayette Building, kitty-corner from the federal courthouse. It's unclear what will happen to the Lafayette Coney Island and the American Coney Island that sit at the base of the building.

This is one of my favorite sets of graffiti. I may do a separate post with more painted windows.

Michigan is my oyster.

I'm on a quest to see more of my home state. First stop: Flint. It was raining the whole time, so the only photos I got were of the Coney Island. But I did document this cow, parked in the Coney Island parking lot:

Magnolias and new leaves

A friend pointed out that these may well be flowering dogwood, but I am virtually certain they are magnolias. Dogwood has that weird stink and the flowers are smaller with four petals, non? Why do I love magnolias so? In part, because they are so ridiculous. They are larger-than-life and dramatic and sensual, like the Brigitte Bardot of flowering trees. They also expire dramatically, leaving a thick mess when the petals fall, refusing to go gently. Their beauty borders on obnoxious, and yet it's breathtakingly lovely.
